So Radiohead suprises once again with a tribute song to the recently deceased, formally older surviving British soldier of World War I, Harry Patch. The song goes above and beyond expected normal Radiohead theatrics with orchestrated magic that tugs at the heartstrings and could double as a movie soundtrack. My guess is good ol' Jonny Greenwood had a big part in this one, being the truly diabolical instrumental genius behind the band and all. Not to say Thom Yorke isn't a walking god among men as well... That aside, the song's lyrics are taken from a direct quote of Patch's, and go something like this:

'Harry Patch (In Memory Of)'

I am the only one that got through
the others died where ever they fell
it was an ambush
they came up from all sides
give your leaders each a gun and then let them fight it out themselves
i've seen devils coming up from the ground
i've seen hell upon this earth
the next will be chemical but they will never learn'

<![CDATA[VIDEO: Cass McCombs - "Dreams Come True Girl"]]>Thu, 30 Jul 2009 04:44:06 GMThttp://dancehallhips.weebly.com/1/post/2009/07/video-cass-mccombs-dreams-come-true-girl.html
As I stood around a stuffy, nearly empty Neumos, sipping on cheap beer and watching the disco ball dangle, pretending not to be mad at myself for getting to the concert so early, a song graced my ears I've been in love with ever since. At first I had my suspicions it was Seattle's own Shane Tutmarc; Shane's got an album hitting stores. Apparently my suspicions were wrong. A week or so later I picked up Cass McComb's Catacombs and realized the song I heard was the album's opener, "Dreams Come True Girl." I've been in love with the track ever since. Here's a beautiful video of the song...and oh yeah, please check out Shane Tutmarc when you get the chance. He's one to watch out for.

Yes, you read the correctly, the legendary Crazy Horse-worshipping jam band Built to Spill has been added to Seattle's hottest music festival this summer. Bumbershoot, what? Last year, with acts like Vampire Weekend, Girl Talk, DeVotchKa, and the Juno-famed Olympia freak-folk Kimya Dawson left the streets of Capitol Hill jam-packed. This year I doubt will be anything less than a spectacle. The Capitol Hill Block Party line-up also includes Sonic Youth, The Gossip, The Thermals, and The Dutchess and The Duke, among many, many others. More details here.

<![CDATA[On the Cover of the Rolling Stone]]>Mon, 04 May 2009 17:53:29 GMThttp://dancehallhips.weebly.com/1/post/2009/05/on-the-cover-of-the-rolling-stone.html
I've been bingin' pretty hard on ol' Bobby D lately so I was excited to see him land the cover of Rolling Stone this month. It's hard to keep up a 'hip' music blog when you're loading up on oldies instead of keepin' up with trends. Hopefully this'll be good filler 'til I figure out who the next Tapes n' Tapes is gonna be. Be sure to check out the legendary David Fricke's 4-star review of Dylan's newest release Together Through Life.

<![CDATA[MIA Gets Influential, Influenza]]>Fri, 01 May 2009 00:40:11 GMThttp://dancehallhips.weebly.com/1/post/2009/04/mia-gets-influential-influenza.html
MIA's made TIME magazine's Top 100 Influential People list for 2009. Apparently sampling the Clash and being featured on a movie trailer lands you such a coveted spot these days. Regardless, she's clearly a talented individual, already sampled by the likes of T.I. and crew.

In other news, MIA recently twittered that she's 'recording swine flu'...perhaps a current eevnts inspired sequel to 'Bird Flu'...or a joke. I wouldn't put either past her

The creator of the 'Wall of Sound' music movement, Phil Spector, has been convicted of 2nd Degree Murder after a fatal Russian Roulette incident where Spector was behind the trigger. Apparently the one-time Beatle producer thinks 'Happiness is a Warm Gun,' too. Too soon? Now he's looking at 15 years to life. That's what he gets for Let It Be.

Sigur Ros frontman Jón Þór Birgisson, along with partner Alex Somers have announced they will be releasing an all instrumental on July 20th. According to the artists, who will be releasing the album under the moniker Riceboy Sleeps, the 68-minute album is 'played solely on acoustic instruments in Iceland (and featuring long-time string collaborators Amiina, as well as the Kopavogsdaetur choir) and then endlessly toyed with on solar-powered laptops in a raw food commune in some far corner of Hawaii.'
